The term cyst refers to a growth on the body that can acquire any sort of shape ranging from sacs to capsules. They mostly appear on the top most layer of the skin that is the epidermis and often contain a serum, liquid or semi solid material in them. Skin cysts can be present in various organs of the body like ovaries, breasts, kidneys or skin. The cyst is often gentle in nature and gradually develops into the skin.
Medically termed as sebaceous cysts, skin cysts have a yellow or white exterior and are formed inside the glands where they secrete sebum. This sebum is like thick cottage cheese and when the cyst gets filled up with it is like a pouch filled with soft liquid. This type of cyst usually forms of the neck or the back area.
There are many different symptoms of cyst. The signs vary according to the location of the cyst on the body. Skin cysts do not cause any sort of pain and can grow into the size of balls if they continue to grow. If they are busted by any chance they result in reddening and inflating the skin. They also tend to appear on more hairy parts of the body and can easily be located by the patient. It is important for the patient to report to a doctor if the cyst grows or is painful.
Skin cysts present in the kidneys cause abdominal pain and blood and pain during urination. Cysts present in the ovaries also have similar symptoms as that of kidney cysts. They can be diagnosed through a regular check up routine because some cysts develop without symptoms.
Many treatments for the problem have been suggested by physicians and the treatment also varies according to the location and stage of the cyst. The cyst can be removed via a surgical operation whereby the cyst is given an incision after local anesthesia and then removed. There are three types of surgical treatments punch biopsy excision, minimal excision and traditional wide excision. There are many natural remedies available too for curing the problem. The use of vitamins, herbs and hot compresses is recommended for the cure. Dry heat can also be very effective if placed on the cyst for a very long time. Gentle low heat for small periods of time is appropriate otherwise more heat can even aggravate the situation.
Vitamin A, B and C containing foods and supplements can also work on removing the cyst. Milk thistle is recommended for this problem and it also helps your liver in functioning properly and also improves the efficiency of the immune system. Sometimes access sugar and lack of sleep can also cause cysts on your skin so a proper balanced lifestyle is also the best remedy to follow. Sometimes natural treatments don’t really work so it is important to report to your doctor and get medical help and the patient should never try to remove the cyst on his own as it can lead to infection or any other problem.
